Mammals of Australia

Wongai Ningaui (Ningaui ridei)

The three species of Ningaui have only recently been discovered and little is known about their biology. The Wongai Ningaui is a very small, aggressive carnivore, feeding on many types of invertebrates. It is able to subdue prey which is often larger than itself. The Ningaui lifespan is short, with few surviving their first breeding season, when females have five to six young in the pouch. Hollow logs, dense shrubs and spinifex provide shelter for Ningauis during the heat of the day.
