The Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden is proud of its wonderful collection of eremophilas of around 155 varieties. Eremophila means 'desert loving', so most are found in regions of up to 300mm rainfall.
The flowers vary in form and in colour depending on whether they are pollinated by birds or insects. Birds pollinate yellow, red and pink flowers which are usually long and tubular. Insects pollinate white, purple and blue flowers that are flatter in form (the most common group).

Eremophila youngii ssp lepidota is also pollinated by birds. This plant is rare in the wild.

Eremophila tetraptera is an interesting variety because it has winged fruits.
Eremophila alternifolia Narrow-leafed Fuchsia BushThe plant yields medicinal properties, mainly to cure congestion, sores and boils. The Pitjantjatjara people, for instance, dried flowers and leaves in order to make a paste. This paste could be used externally or, after adding some water, internally.
Eremophila lachnocalyx is an unusual variety with very compact leaves.
Eremophila bignoniiflora has seeds that have been used as a purgative. It can be pollinated by either birds or insects so it is called an "in-betweener".
Eremophila longifolia Weeping EmubushFor pains in joints and muscles, Aborigines in central Australia prepared a liniment (medical fluid) by blending crushed leaves with animal fat. Rubbed on the body this mixture generated heat but did not cause skin burn.
