Mammals of Australia

Mulgara (Dasycercus cristicauda)

This rare marsupial is distinguished by a crest of black hair along its tail. It is a fierce predator, feeding on large invertebrates, small rodents and reptiles and is well adapted to living in sandy desert conditions. For example, by producing highly concentrated urine and dry faecal pellets it is able to obtain all its moisture requirements from its food. The extrem daytime heat of the desert is avoided by the Mulgaras when they take refuge in an extensive warren system. The Mulgara's life span of at least six years is long by medium sized marsupial standards. Females raise up to eight young in a poorly developed pouch.
