The Andamooka lily emerges after deep soaking rains from a pale egg-shaped bulb which is 7-10 cm in diameter to display its pretty pale yellow flowers. Leaves rise from the base of the plant, growing to about 50 cm. Flowering from summer to autumn, the lily has strongly scented flowers which emit an unpleasant fragrance, -particularly in the evenings. It occurs over a wide range of soil types, but in particular on sandy floodplains where it can be found in abundance when conditions are favourable. Large flat, green leaves can emerge within several days after rain. After flowering, bulb-like seeds the size of marbles are produced in abundance. The Andamooka lily is a name that is used locally, this plant is also known as the Darling lily and Stink lily. Distribution of the Andamooka lily in Australia. |
